Lodge History

Tipisa LodgeThe Tipisa Honor Camper Society was born in 1930 at Camp Kanesatake in southeast Michigan. Camp Kanesatake was built in 1926 and was the Wolverine Council camp until it was sold in 1981. Tipisa is believed to have been created by George Crossland (Wolverine's first executive) and Byron Vedder, the camp Indian Lore staff member in the 1920's and 30's. The land on which Kanesatake sat was steeped in Indian history. It was a meeting place for Chief Tecumseh during the War of 1812, had Indian burial grounds on it and had the ruins of an old Indian smoke tower buried in the center of the camp. Kanesatake means "Camp on a hill". The camp was located near the intersection of two of the oldest Indian roads in the midwest.

Order of the Arrow History

In May 1915, E. Urner Goodman and Carrol A. Edson were selected to serve as summer camp director and assistant director of Treasure Island. Both men were 24 years old. Goodman had been Scoutmaster in Philadelphia and had considerable experience in Scouting and camping. Edson was a graduate of Dartmouth College and has also been in Scouting for several years. They spent many hours together planning their summer camping program, and both did considerable reading and research to prepare themselves for their new responsibilities.
These Scouters founded the Order of the Arrow to serve as a useful purpose: causing the Scout Promise and Scout Law to spring into action in the lives of the campers. To this day, we are dedicated to this high purpose.
Dr. Goodman said:
"The Order is a thing of the spirit rather than of the mechanics. Organization, operational procedures, and all that go with them are necessary in any large and growing movement, ut they are not what counts in the end. The things of the spirit are what count:

Brotherhood - in a day when there is too much hatred at home and abroad

Cheerfulness
- in a day when the pessimists have the floor and cynics are popular

Service
- in a day when millions are interested in getting or grasping, rather than giving."
The Order is a thing of the individual rather than a thing of the masses. The ideals of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service spring to life in each of us. Each Arrowman's actions count toward that success.
